Lens Control Ring

A programmable Control Ring on the lens barrel offers a rewarding and tactile experience, allowing the photographer to change exposure settings instantly without taking their eye away from the viewfinder. ISO, exposure compensation, shutter speed or aperture can be assigned to this control ring via the camera’s menu.

Nano USM focusing motor

RF 24-70MM F2.8L IS USM alongside RF 15-35MM F2.8L IS USM are the first fast aperture zoom lenses to feature Nano USM technology. This Canon technology uses linear drive focusing motors which are both extremely fast and silent, making it ideal when shooting video and stills.

Advanced optics and lens coatings

RF 24-70MM F2.8L IS USM features a combination of three aspherical elements and three ultra-low dispersion (UD) elements to provide stunning image quality and to tackle any possible lens aberrations. A glass-moulded aspherical lens element is manufactured by expertly selecting the perfect optical materials to be moulded and pressed into an intricate shape with the ideal curvature that converges parallel rays to a single point, reducing spherical aberration and chromatic aberration across the whole image frame. Advanced lens coatings such as Air Sphere (ASC) and Super Spectral coatings provide a new benchmark in ultimate image quality and sharpness.

9-blade aperture

RF 24-70MM F2.8L IS USM’s aperture system uses 9 aperture blades to produce a round aperture, producing smoother out-of-focus areas to help the main subject stand out even better against the background.

5-Stop Image Stabilizer

The Image Stabilizer used in RF 24-70MM F2.8L IS USM is brand new, based on some of the technology first used in EF lenses. The combination of this technology and high-speed RF communication means that the performance of this lens surpasses the best technology in the EF range. The technical benefit is the stabilization of the light as it enters the camera – giving the camera a good basis for calculating accurate AF and tracking. The benefit for photographers is the ability to shoot much longer exposures without motion blur affecting the resulting image. The system will automatically detect when used on a tripod and turn off the IS system automatically.
